Protomelas sp. “steveni”
Common Name: Taiwan Reef Cichlid
Scientific Name: Protomelas sp. “steveni”
Family: Cichlidae
Origin: Lake Malawi (Taiwan Reef), East Africa
Overview:
Protomelas sp. steveni is a highly attractive Haplochromine cichlid from Lake Malawi, best known for its bold coloration and active swimming behavior. The Taiwan Reef variant is especially prized for its vivid blues and contrasting yellow or orange highlights, making it a standout in large African cichlid aquariums.
Appearance:
Adult males develop bright metallic blue bodies with contrasting yellow to orange dorsal and anal fins, depending on mood and dominance. Females and juveniles are more subdued, usually silver or gray. Adults typically reach 6–7 inches (15–18 cm) in length.
Behavior & Temperament:
This species is considered semi-aggressive. While males can be territorial—particularly during breeding—it is generally compatible with other medium to large Malawi Haps and Peacock cichlids. It should not be housed with very small or overly aggressive species.
Diet:
In the wild, Protomelas sp. steveni feeds on invertebrates and small organisms found around rocky reefs. In aquariums, it thrives on a diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, supplemented with frozen foods such as mysis shrimp or krill.
Habitat & Tank Setup:
Native to rocky reef zones, this species prefers an aquarium with rock formations for territories combined with open swimming space. A sand substrate and strong filtration help replicate natural conditions and maintain water quality.
Reproduction:
Like most Lake Malawi cichlids, this species is a maternal mouthbrooder. Females carry fertilized eggs and fry in their mouths for protection until the fry are free-swimming.
Why Choose the Taiwan Reef Cichlid?
With its intense color contrast, manageable temperament, and active presence, Protomelas sp. steveni makes an excellent centerpiece fish for Malawi Hap and Peacock communities.
