Albino Eureka Red

The Eureka Red Peacock (Aulonocara eureka) is a striking Lake Malawi cichlid known for its vivid red and blue coloration, and albino variants are bred for unique appearance. While albino forms may have reduced pigmentation, they share the same basic care needs as their pigmented counterparts.

Habitat & Tank Setup

  • Tank size: Minimum 48" x 18" x 18"

  • Water type: Warm tropical freshwater, mimicking Lake Malawi’s alkaline conditions.

  • pH & hardness: Maintain pH 7.2–8.5 and hardness 7–12 dGH

  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel; avoid sharp edges.

  • Decorations: Provide rocky reefs, caves, and open swimming areas. Peacocks are active swimmers and need space to explore

  • Filtration: Moderate to high flow; caners are active and may stir up substrate.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C)

  • pH: 7.2–8.5

  • KH: 7–12 dGH

  • Ammonia/Nitrites: 0 ppm

  • Nitrate: <20 ppm

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous; feed a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen/fresh foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia), and occasional vegetable matter.

  • Feeding schedule: 2–3 small meals per day; avoid overfeeding to prevent nitrate spikes.

Compatibility

  • Temperament: Social but territorial; males defend territories.

  • Tank mates: Peaceful, similarly sized cichlids from Lake Malawi or other cichlid species. Avoid aggressive or overly active fish that may stress them.

Breeding

  • Spawning: Triggered by water changes and temperature shifts.

  • Egg care: Females guard eggs; males guard fry. Provide flat rocks or spawning mops.

  • Fry care: Feed newly hatched fry with infusoria, then microworms and baby brine shrimp.
