Aulonocara Turkis

Common Name: Turquoise Peacock Cichlid

Scientific Name: Aulonocara sp.

Family: Cichlidae

Origin: Lake Malawi, East Africa

Overview:

Aulonocara Turkis is a vibrant and popular African cichlid known for its brilliant turquoise-blue coloration and relatively peaceful temperament. As a member of the Peacock cichlid group, it is highly sought after by aquarium hobbyists for both its beauty and manageable behavior.

Appearance:

Adult males display intense turquoise and electric blue tones, often with subtle metallic or green highlights across the body and fins. Females are typically smaller and less colorful, showing muted silver or gray hues. Adults usually reach 5–6 inches (12–15 cm) in length.

Behavior & Temperament:

Compared to many African cichlids, Aulonocara Turkis is considered semi-peaceful. Males can be territorial, especially during breeding, but they are generally less aggressive than Mbuna species. Best kept with other Peacock cichlids or similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates.

Diet

In the wild, Aulonocara species feed by sensing small invertebrates in sandy substrates. In aquariums, they thrive on a diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, supplemented with frozen or prepared meaty foods. Avoid overly fatty foods to maintain health and coloration.

Habitat & Tank Setup:

These fish originate from sandy areas of Lake Malawi, often near rocky outcrops. In captivity, provide a tank with sand substrate, rock formations for territories, and open swimming space. Stable, clean water is essential.

Reproduction:

Aulonocara Turkis is a maternal mouthbrooder. After spawning, the female carries the eggs and fry in her mouth for protection until the fry are ready to swim freely.

Why Choose Aulonocara Turkis?

With its stunning color, active swimming behavior, and relatively calm nature, the Turquoise Peacock is an excellent choice for hobbyists looking to add bold color without extreme aggression.
