Size & Lifespan

• Adult Size: 10–12 inches
• Lifespan: Approximately 8–10 years with proper care

Tank Requirements

• Minimum Tank Size: 125–150+ gallons recommended
• Temperature: 75–82°F
• pH: 7.8–8.6 (alkaline)
• Water Type: Hard water preferred

Tank Setup:

• Deep sandy substrate (essential for natural burrowing behavior)
• Large open swimming areas
• Minimal rockwork to prevent injuries while diving
• Strong filtration and good water movement required 

Diet

• Carnivorous
• Feed high-quality carnivore or predator cichlid pellets
• Supplement with frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, or chopped seafood
• Feed 1–2 times daily

Behavior & Compatibility

• Generally peaceful for a large hap, but can be territorial
• Not an mbuna—prefers open sand habitats
• Best kept with other large, non-aggressive Malawi haps or peacocks
• Avoid small fish that may be eaten
• Can be kept singly or as one male with multiple females in very large tanks
