Exochromis anagenys

Common Name: Exochromis Cichlid

Scientific Name: Exochromis anagenys

Family: Cichlidae

Origin: Lake Malawi, East Africa

Overview:

Exochromis anagenys is a large, powerful African cichlid native to Lake Malawi. Known for its impressive size, bold personality, and predatory nature, this species is best suited for experienced aquarists with large aquariums. It is sometimes referred to as a “Malawi torpedo” due to its streamlined body shape.

Appearance:

This species has a long, sleek body built for speed and hunting. Coloration typically includes silver to gray tones with darker shading along the back and subtle markings. Mature males may develop stronger coloration and more pronounced finnage. Adults can reach 12–14 inches (30–35 cm) in length.

Behavior & Temperament:

Exochromis anagenys is a highly predatory and aggressive cichlid. In the wild, it actively hunts smaller fish in open water. In captivity, it should only be housed with large, robust tank mates that cannot be swallowed. It is not suitable for community or mixed-size tanks.

Diet:

This species is strictly carnivorous, feeding primarily on other fish in its natural habitat. In aquariums, it should be offered large, high-quality carnivore pellets, frozen foods, or other meaty diets formulated for predatory cichlids.

Habitat & Tank Requirements:

In Lake Malawi, E. anagenys inhabits open water and rocky shorelines. A very large aquarium with open swimming space, strong filtration, and stable water parameters is essential. Décor should be minimal and sturdy.

Reproduction:

Like many Lake Malawi cichlids, Exochromis anagenys is a maternal mouthbrooder. Females carry fertilized eggs and fry in their mouths until the young are developed enough to swim freely.

Aquarium Suitability:

This species is recommended for advanced hobbyists only due to its size, aggression, and dietary needs. When housed correctly, it is an impressive and commanding centerpiece fish.
